Tic Tac Toe is the classic game of X and O that almost everyone learned on the back of a school notebook. Our free online version lets you play quick rounds right in your browser, on your phone or computer, with no download and no sign-up.
The rules take seconds to learn, but there is still real strategy in where you place your mark. It is a perfect game for a short tea break, and a great way to warm up before trying something tougher like Minesweeper or Sudoku.
How to play Tic Tac Toe
- The game is played on a 3x3 grid.
- You and your opponent take turns placing your mark (X or O) in an empty square.
- Get three of your marks in a row – across, down or diagonally – to win.
- If all nine squares are filled and nobody has three in a row, the game is a draw.
- Start a new round and try a different opening.
Tips to score higher
- Taking the centre square first gives you the most ways to make a line.
- If you cannot take the centre, a corner is the next best choice.
- Always check whether your opponent is one move away from winning, and block them.
- Try to create a "fork" – a move that threatens two lines at once so your opponent can only block one.
