Tirunelveli, fondly called Nellai, is one of the oldest towns in southern Tamil Nadu. It lies on the banks of the Thamirabarani, a river that people here speak about with real affection.

At the heart of the town stands the Nellaiappar Temple, a large and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Kanthimathi, known for its musical pillars and long corridors. The twin towns of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai together form a busy centre, and Palayamkottai is known for its many schools and colleges.
The region's countryside, with its rivers, green fields and the Western Ghats in the distance, is beautiful. Popular outings include Papanasam on the Thamirabarani, and the well-known Courtallam (Kutralam) waterfalls are a short drive away during the season.
