At the centre of everything stands the Meenakshi Amman Temple, with its tall, colourful gopurams that can be seen from across the city. The streets around it are named after Tamil months, and life in old Madurai still moves around the temple. Nearby, the grand Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal shows off the Nayak era's architecture.
Madurai is called Thoonga Nagaram – the city that never sleeps – and its food scene proves it. Late-night idli and parotta, spicy non-veg dishes, kari dosa and, most famously, a cooling glass of jigarthanda are all part of local life. Madurai's malli (jasmine) is also famous across Tamil Nadu.
The city comes alive during the Chithirai festival, when huge crowds gather for the celestial wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar and Lord Kallazhagar's entry into the Vaigai. During Pongal, villages near Madurai such as Alanganallur are well known for Jallikattu.
