Erode is a lively town in the Kongu region of western Tamil Nadu, on the banks of the Kaveri. It is a place of trade, textiles and hard-working people.
Erode is famous for turmeric – its turmeric market is one of the best known in the country, and the town is often called the turmeric city. It is also an important centre for handloom and textiles, with busy markets selling cloth and garments.
The district has some lovely places to visit. At Bhavani, the Bhavani river meets the Kaveri, and the Sangameshwarar Temple at this confluence is an important pilgrimage spot. The Chennimalai Murugan Temple sits on a hill, and the Bhavanisagar Dam is a popular outing. Erode is also the birthplace of the social reformer Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, and his memorial house in the town draws visitors.
Like the rest of Kongu Nadu, Erode has its own food traditions and its own gentle, respectful style of Tamil.
