Tamil Nadu Geography Quiz โ Rivers, Hills & Places
Tamil Nadu packs an amazing variety of landscapes into one state: misty hill stations, roaring waterfalls, river deltas green with paddy, mangrove forests, coral reefs and a long sandy coastline facing the Bay of Bengal. This free Tamil Nadu geography quiz tests how well you know them. Each question has four options and a short explanation, so by the end you will have a much clearer picture of the land itself.
What this quiz covers
- Rivers โ the Kaveri, Vaigai, Thamirabarani, Palar and Thenpennai: where they rise and which cities they flow past.
- Hills and hill stations โ the Nilgiris, Palani Hills, Shevaroy Hills, Anaimalai Hills, Javadhu Hills and the highest peak in the state.
- Coasts and seas โ the Coromandel Coast, the Palk Strait, the Gulf of Mannar and the islands between India and Sri Lanka.
- Waterfalls, forests and wildlife โ Hogenakkal, Courtallam, Pichavaram, Mudumalai and Point Calimere.
Rivers that shaped Tamil Nadu
The Kaveri is the river most closely tied to Tamil life. It rises at Talakaveri in the Kodagu hills of Karnataka, enters Tamil Nadu, thunders over the rocks at Hogenakkal, splits around the island of Srirangam near Tiruchirappalli and fans out into the fertile delta before reaching the sea. The ancient port of Poompuhar stood at its mouth. Further south, the Vaigai flows through Madurai, and the Thamirabarani, which begins in the Pothigai hills, flows past Tirunelveli. In the north, the Palar runs past Vellore, and the Thenpennai rises in Karnataka before crossing Tamil Nadu to the Bay of Bengal.
Hills, peaks and passes
The Western Ghats run along the state's western edge, where they meet the Eastern Ghats in the Nilgiris. Doddabetta in the Nilgiris is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal sits in the Palani Hills, Yercaud in the Shevaroy Hills near Salem and Valparai in the Anaimalai Hills. A wide break in the Ghats called the Palghat Gap links Coimbatore with Kerala and has long been a natural route for trade and travel.
Coast, islands and the sea
Tamil Nadu's eastern shoreline is known as the Coromandel Coast. In the south-east, the Pamban Bridge links the mainland to Pamban Island, home to Rameswaram and the abandoned town of Dhanushkodi. Beyond it lies Adam's Bridge, also called Ram Setu, a chain of shoals stretching towards Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. The Palk Strait separates Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, and the Gulf of Mannar, rich in coral reefs and sea life, is protected as a biosphere reserve. At Kanyakumari, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet.
Study tips
